Astragalus Root (Huang qi) has been used as a popular herbal tonic in China for many centuries. Some of the known active components include flavonoids, free amino acids, trace minerals and polyphenols.

Astragalus is believed to build stamina and vitality. It has a reputation for improving overall health by helping the body to maintain a healthy immune system. As an antioxidant, it helps to counteract cell damage caused by unstable oxygen molecules called free radicals.

Research shows Astragalus root stimulates the immune system in many ways. It increases the number of stem cells in bone marrow and lymph tissue and encourages their development into active immune cells. It appears to help trigger immune ceils from a "resting" state into heightened activity.

One study showed Astragalus root helps promote and maintain respiratory health. It also enhances the body's production of immunoglobulin and stimulates macrophages. Astragalus can help activate T-cells and natural killer (NK) cells.

Several studies also show Astragalus proffers heart-protecting effects, including protection against oxidative damage. Additionally, the flavonoids, saponins, and polysaccharides found in Astragalus root help minimize free radical damage to membranes.

2. Mucuna (Mucuna Pruriens), also known as velvet bean and cowitch, is an herb used as a minor food crop and medicinal bean in India, West Africa, and Central America.

It is indigenous to India and is a popular medicinal in that region. It is widespread over most of the subcontinent and can be found in bushes, hedges and dry-deciduous.

Mucuna can be a very beneficial supplement for bodybuilders. It is high in the amino acid L-Dopa which helps maintain healthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Another benefit of Mucuna, is that it may increase the production of HGH (Human Growth Hormone). An increase in HGH levels can increase the body's ability to build lean muscle and break down fat.

Mucuna has also been shown to have diuretic effects. It increases tissue resiliency and improves coordination. Indeed, Shatavari is the Universal Rasayana. The name Shatavari is symbolic which means one who possesses one hundred husbands. It has various synonyms like atirasa (very juicy), narayani (from which famous preparation Narayana taila is manufactured), satpadi (possesses hundreds of roots), suksma patra (has tiny leaves etc). Charaka has categorized it as balya promoting strength or a tonic, vaya sthapana – promotes longevity, sukra janana (spermatogenic), Also, he has cited it as a rejuvenative to rasa and mamsa dhatus and mamsavaha srotasa. Susruta has mentioned it as sukra sodhana – purifies the sperms or semen. Whereas, it is quoted as vajikara – augments the sexual vigour and quantity of semen (Sarngandhara Samhita). It is also classified as samsamana – neither it aggravates nor it eliminates the doshas from the body, but simply pacifies the aggravated doshas especially, pitta.

4. Asphaltum punjabinum or Shilajit has been used for thousands of years and for as many different health problems. It is listed as a healing agent in ancient Sanskrit writings and is used today in Ayurvedic health practices. The discovery is said to be made by Himalayan villagers observing large white monkeys migrate to the mountains in the warm summer months. The monkeys were seen to be chewing a semi-soft substance that flowed from between layers of rock. The villagers attributed the monkey’s great strength, longevity and wisdom to the substance. They began to consume it themselves and reported a broad spectrum of improvements in health. It seemed to give them more energy, relieve digestive problems, Increase sex drive, improve memory and cognition, improve diabetes, reduce allergies, improve the quality and quantity of life and it seemed to cure all diseases

5. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is renowned as an herbal adaptogen. In the Indian Ayurvedic tradition it is used as a Rasayana, a dietary supplement or practice promoting rejuvenation, mental and physical health, as well as providing a defense against aging and challenging environmental factors. Ashwagandha root has been shown to protect brain cells from oxidative damage caused by exposure to stressors. Historically, the plant has been used as an aphrodisiac, liver tonic, anti-inflammatory agent, astringent, and more recently to treat bronchitis, asthma, ulcers, emaciation, insomnia, and senile dementia. Clinical trials and animal research support the use of ashwaganda for anxiety, cognitive and neurological disorders, inflammation, and Parkinson's disease. Ashwaganda's chemopreventive properties make it a potentially useful adjunct for patients undergoing radiation and chemotherapy. Ashwaganda is also used therapeutically as an adaptogen for patients with nervous exhaustion, insomnia, and debility due to stress, and as an immune stimulant in patients with low white blood cell counts.

Dark Kenthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14546693246302919365noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6057296972816896807.post-31135144343522304182009-10-14T21:05:00.001-07:002009-10-14T21:50:01.929-07:00Bodysculpting and other words I like to hear...In my ongoing quest to improve myself, I have read a lot of articles and have come across several words that resonate positively with me... Not Harder... Part 1I usually smile when I see people in Spin/Rev/Indoor Cycling Classes pushing to their max... While I always appreciate their efforts, I wonder if they have ever been told about lactic acid, heart rate training and the difference between aerobic and anaerobic respiration...

It should be obvious by now that I am a science geek and I like to hear stuff about mitochondria and the Kreb's Cycle... Most people's eyes glaze over when those topics are mentioned so I have looked for a few simple explanations so we can all get more from our cardio.

Lets start with anaerobic respiration aka OVERTRAINING...

http://www.wisedude.com/science_engineering/anaerobic_respiration.htm

Did you know we humans have about 639 muscles in our body, with each of them having their own name? Most of these muscles are attached firmly to the bones of the skeleton, which make up the framework of the body. They are highly important parts of the body because without them we would not be able to move, eat, breathe, talk and even the heart would stop because the blood gets pumped in and out of the heart only through muscular action! Exercise is a good way to keep these muscles in shape, but if we exercise for too long a time, the muscles start to ache very badly and this is due to anaerobic respiration.

Under normal conditions, the body cells go through aerobic respiration, which is a long process where oxygen is used to convert the stored up glucose molecules, completely into energy. This type of respiration takes place in most living creatures, but there are a few parasitic worms and lower forms of plants (bacteria and yeast) that breathe anaerobically, that is, in the absence of oxygen. Anaerobic respiration also takes place in human beings when we exercise rigorously. During this time, we tend to take in less oxygen and this lack of oxygen prevents the oxygen from breaking down completely. This 'oxygen debt' results in the formation of an acid, or rather a 'poison' called lactic acid. This lactic acid gets stored in the muscles and causes the pain. The tiredness is caused by the production of different types of toxins, which are carried by the blood throughout the body.

The only way to remove this acid is to rest for a while, take in deep breaths of air (the extra oxygen helps to convert the lactic acid into a safer form) and the pain slowly subsides. The pain is actually a good way to control the body's activities. If a person continues to exercise and ignores the warnings being given by the body, the person might faint due to lack of oxygen or seriously sprain some of the muscles.

There are many differences between the two types of respiration, the most important being the difference between the amount of energy released. In aerobic respiration, we get about 38 ATP molecules of energy from a single glucose molecule, while in anaerobic respiration only 2 ATP molecules of energy are released for the same quantity of glucose. So it is always advantageous to take breaks while exercising; while resting, body removes any waste products, the cells get rejuvenated, the brain's nerve cells get re-charged, the joints of the body replenish their supplies of lubricants and much more. The body is then fit enough to carry on with the exercise and the rest of the day as well.

The body is quite an ingenious instrument and should be handled with care!

Now to geek out on LACTIC ACID fermentation...

LOL... Only NERDS need to read more...

http://staff.jccc.net/pdecell/cellresp/fermentation.html

If oxygen is absent, many cells are still able to use glycolysis to produce ATP. Two ways this can be done are through fermentation and anaerobic respiration. Fermentation is the process by which the electrons and hydrogen ions from the NADH produced by glycolysis are donated to another organic molecule.

The point of fermentation

The reason this is done is to produce NAD+ which in tern is needed to keep glycolysis going. Remember, that unless the cell has some sort of electron transport system, the NADH is not usable. At the same time NAD+ is needed for glycolysis and its much less expensive in terms of energy for the cell to simply take the NADH that would normally go to the mitochondrion and use it to regenerate the NAD+. The NADH produced by glycolysis donates it's hydrogen ions and electrons that in aerobic respiration would have ended up powering electron transport phosphorylation.

Other fermentation pathways

There are a number of fermentation pathways that different cells use. Yeast cells produce ethyl alcohol by fermentation. Certain cells of our body, namely muscle cells, use lactic acid fermentation, while depending on the organism some of the other products of fermentation include acetic acid, formic acid, acetone and isopropyl alcohol.

Fermentation and running

In our bodies certain muscle cells, called fast twitch muscles, have less capability for storing and using oxygen than other muscles. When you run and these muscles run short of oxygen, the fast twitch muscles begin using lactic acid fermentation. This allows the muscle to continue to function by producing ATP by glycolysis.

The muscles get enough ATP for quick spurts or shall we say sprints, but quickly become fatigued as their stores of glycogen are used up. Eventually you cramp. This is in part because the muscles lack sufficient ATP to continue contracting. Also, lactic acid builds up and must be metabolized by the liver. Runners who sprint actually have more muscle cells specialized for lactic acid fermentation than do long distance runners.

White meat and dark meat

If you want to see what these muscles are like, when you eat chicken or turkey the white meat is fast twitch muscle. The dark meat is what is called slow twitch muscle. This meat is dark because it contains an oxygen holding protein called myoglobin. Note that the slow twitch muscles tend to be wing and leg muscles where long term endurance is required. The fast twitch muscles tend to be more common in the breast where quick response but not necessarily endurance is needed. Also, wild animals tend to have more slow twitch muscle than their domestic counterparts.
Dark Kenthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14546693246302919365noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6057296972816896807.post-38958609181313544472009-10-06T20:48:00.000-07:002009-10-06T20:57:26.971-07:00My supplement line-up... not for the faint of heart...1. Ultra Guggulow by Doctor's Best - stimulates thyroid, increases metabolisim, lowers cholesterol
The mukul myrrh (Commiphora mukul) tree is a small, thorny plant distributed throughout India. Guggul and gum guggulu are the names given to a yellowish resin produced by the stem of the plant. This resin has been used historically and is also the source of modern extracts of guggul.
Gum Guggul Gum guggul is related to myrrh gum and also to Boswellia serrata, another resinous herb prominent in the Ayurvedic materia medica. Gum guggul, often referred to simply as "guggul," has been used in the Ayurvedic herbal tradition since at least 600 B.C. The herb is mentioned in the Vedas, the Holy Scriptures of India, which are estimated to date back anywhere from 3,000 to 10,000 years. Modern investigation into gum guggul began in 1964, with a series of tests conducted by G.V. Satyavati. The inspiration for this research is a Ayurvedic treatise written in Sanskrit that describes in detail a condition called "coating and obstruction of channels." Impressed by the apparent analogy to the cardiovascular system, Satyavati and others initiated a series of tests to determine if gum guggul, which was mentioned in the treatise, would have any effect on blood lipid levels. This set the stage for an extensive series of studies on gum guggul's pharmacology and clinical effects.
Guggulsterones Systematic analysis of gum guggul resin carried out by Indian researchers in the 1980s identified the active ingredients as a group of lipid-based compounds called guggulsterols and guggulsterones. It was determined that two members of this group, Z-guggulsterone and E-guggulsterone, are largely responsible for the herb's effect on cholesterol and blood fats. An extract standardized for guggulsterone content of gum guggul was then developed by the CDRI in Lucknow, India. This extract, called "Gugulipid", is now the preferred form of gum guggul for use in clinical studies.
Ultra Guggulow contains Gugulipid standardized to supply 25 mg of guggulsterones per 1000 mg of extract.

2. Nettle Root-Power fom Nature's Herbs - diuretic, blocks conversion of testesterone to estrogen
Nettle is highly nutritive, being rich in chlorophyll, beta carotene, vitamins A, C, E and K, several of the B vitamins, tannins, volatile oils, flavonoids, iron, calcium, potassium, phosphates, and various other minerals, especially silica. Today nettle is recognised as having astringent, expectorant, galactagogue, tonic, anti-inflammatory, hemostatic, and diuretic properties, and is recommended for treating bone and joint conditions, inflammation and irritation of the urinary tract and for preventing urinary system gravel, whilst the diuretic action of the plant has been shown to significantly increase urine volume and can help to alleviate bladder infections.
Some of the more recent research on BPH (prostate enlargement) and stinging nettle indicates that the nettle root can interfere with or block a number of hormone-related chemical processes in the body that are implicated in the development of BPH. In clinical research, nettle has demonstrated the ability to stop the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (by inhibiting aromatase, an enzyme required for the conversion), as well as to directly bind to SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin) itself - thereby preventing SHBG from binding to other hormones. Other research also reveals that nettles can prevent SHBG that has already bound to a hormone from attaching to the receptor sites on the prostate, as well as to decrease the production of estrogens (estradiol and estrone) by inhibiting an enzyme required for their production. In summary, most of the intercellular processes required to trigger the prostate to grow new cells and enlarge seems to be inhibited by nettle root. Human and animal clinical studies have confirmed these effects and also demonstrated that nettle root works as well as the drug finasteride which is prescribed for BPH and is also better tolerated than the drug.
The effect of nettle root on dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels has also made it a treatment for hair loss, as male pattern balding has often been linked to an excess of DHT, as has hair loss in women too. In folklore it was always believed that nettles were an effective treatment for baldness and modern science appears to validate this belief. Nettle root is also valuable as a source of lignans, a type of phytoestrogens, which have become more and more valued in recent years, and which accounts for its galactogogue property (increases breast milk production). Nettle root also contains a number of chemical compounds which appear to significantly stimulate the immune system.

3. Chasteberry Power from Natures Herbs - regulates hormonal balance, boosts fertility, reduces negative effects of elevated testesterone and estrogen
Research into chasteberry has shown the presence of various flavonoids, and Yugoslavian chemists have suggested that the ripe fruits contain certain steroids. Chasteberry increases the production of luteinizing hormone, and inhibits the release of follicle-stimulating hormone. By this sex-hormone modifying action, chaste berry modifies the secretion of both estrogen and progesterone.
Chasteberry has been renowned since ancient times as a treatment for various problems of the female reproductive system. It is a traditional remedy for irregular periods, amenorrhea and dysmenorrhea, and has long been used to help ease the symptoms of the menopause. More recently it has become recognised in Europe as a standard herbal treatment for general PMS symptoms and is also commonly used to treat other problems which can be linked to the menstrual cycle, such as migraine and acne. Chasteberry also has a reputation for alleviating fibrocystic breast disease, relieving the pain of endometriosis and for regulating ovulation and therefore promoting fertility. From all these uses it is clear that the berry has distinct hormonal effects on the body, and in modern times it's general success in these applications has prompted a great deal of research to be carried out to try and discover its mode of action. However, so far the chasteberry has managed to retain its secrets and the constituents responsible for its therapeutic actions have not been positively identified. Nevertheless, it is believed that the berry has the effects it does because it contains chemical compounds which act on the pituitary gland, the body's master gland which both produces hormones and from its location at the base of the brain directs the other endoctrine glands to produce hormones. Chasteberry is believed to effectively regulate the pituitary gland's functions, especially its progesterone and prolactin functions, and to therefore have a considerable influence on the body's hormonal balance, normalising it by enabling greater or lesser hormone release to occur, and making the chasteberry one of the world's most medically interesting herbs and the subject of ever increasing study.
Given the amount of study carried out on chasteberry, there is now a significant body of scientific research supporting its use for various complaints. Its use with PMS has been the main area of study, with trial results indicating that between 60% and 90% of women given chasteberry show reduced PMS symptoms. Results clearly improve over time, which is what should generally be expected from herbal treatments, but an important point about chasteberry is that because its overriding benefit is the long term balancing of a woman's hormonal system, it can never be regarded as a fast acting herb, but must be seen as a gradual remedy which needs to be taken for some months to realise its therapeutic properties.
Another area of considerable study on the effects of chasteberry has been its use for relieving breast tenderness or cyclic mastalgia. Several studies have reported a significant reduction in breast pain in women given chasteberry, again based on trials which were carried out over several months. Another recent study was on the berry's effects on women with a form of irregular menstruation known as luteal phase defect, a condition believed to be related to excessive levels of the hormone prolactin. After a trial lasting 3 months significant improvements were noted, reinforcing the claims made for chasteberry as a regulator of the pituitary gland's release of prolactin.
Although no studies have been carried out on the effects of chasteberry for those in the menopause, this application of the berry continues to be very popular and it is as firmly established as ever as one of the most important herbs for treating menopausal symptoms. It is also prescribed by herbalists for uterine cysts, for depression, anxiety and fatigue, and for use as an anti-androgen, as it is believed to inhibit the action of androgenic hormones.

4. Chrysin from Jarrow - blocks the conversion of elevated testesterone to estrogen
Chrysin (5,7-Dihydroxyflavone) is a potent bioflavonoid found in the plant Passiflora coerula, a member of the passion flower family. Honey combs also contain small amounts.
Chrysin is the most powerful of several flavonoids that have been extensively tested in vitro and found to exhibit anti-estrogenic activity by inhibiting the aromatization process. The effect of a reduction in estrogen production is a reduction in the signal being sent to the pituitary to attenuate the secretion of luteinizing hormone. When LH secretion is maintained or increased, testosterone production is maintained or increased as a consequence.
Chrysin can impact lean body mass by enhancing metabolism of testosterone and androstenedione. This product has been shown to have a significant effect in modulating the response to stress. It binds to receptors in the brain known as the benzodiazepine specific receptor sites. As a result, Chrysin can aid athletes in dealing with the stress of training.
Unfortunately the effectiveness of Chrysin in vivo (in the human body) is limited by its poor oral bioavailability. Research has shown that most of the Chrysin ingested is excreted. Chrysin may be more effective when co-administered with Bioperine®, an extract of black pepper that has been shown to improve the absorption of certain nutrients taken with it.

5. Tribulus from NOW - diuretic, elevates testesterone
Tribulus terrestris (Sanskrit name: gokshura) has been extensively used for sexual dysfunction in both; males and females. In China and India , the herb Tribulus terrestris has been touted as liver, kidney, urinary, and cardiovascular remedies. In Ayurvedic science, the herb is considered to be a general health tonic and urinary tract disinfectant. In Traditional Chinese Medicine Tribulus terrestris is known under the name Bai Ji Li
It is a natural herbal alternative to synthetic anabolic hormones without any clinically proven toxic effects. Administration leads to increased muscle mass in active sports by activating the enzyme associated with energy metabolism. At the same time it has also been reported to have the ability to stimulate some functions associated with the increase of the body's natural endogenous testosterone and lutenizing hormone (LH) levels. With the increase of the body's natural endogenous testosterone level, it can help alleviating some symptoms associated with male menopauseDark Kenthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14546693246302919365noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6057296972816896807.post-5745070564744857312009-08-08T15:56:00.000-07:002009-08-10T10:45:50.994-07:00Fabulously FIERCE in 2K10
My theme for 2K10 is Fabulously FIERCE... Two pack and 4 pack abs are not Fabulously FIERCE... Love handles are not Fabulously FIERCE... soft, squeezable biceps, triceps, glutes, quads etc. are not Fabulously FIERCE... Anything cute is not Fabulously FIERCE... Words and phrases like OK, allright, next time..., you tried..., average, not bad... You get the idea.

To get more ripped, I have to control my Diet and Exercise. I have to eat even less and train harder than last year. I have to add 3 days of intensive weight training in addition to the 5 days of Spin Classes every week. I have to count calories... Carbs have to be kept to a minimum and I am maxing out on Protein. Any carbs will have to be good carbs aka low GI foods (http://www.glycemicindex.com/)

The glycemic index (GI) is a ranking of carbohydrates on a scale from 0 to 100 according to the extent to which they raise blood sugar levels after eating. Foods with a high GI are those which are rapidly digested and absorbed and result in marked fluctuations in blood sugar levels. Low-GI foods, by virtue of their slow digestion and absorption, produce gradual rises in blood sugar and insulin levels, and have proven benefits for health. Low GI diets have been shown to improve both glucose and lipid levels in people with diabetes (type 1 and type 2). They have benefits for weight control because they help control appetite and delay hunger. Low GI diets also reduce insulin levels and insulin resistance.

http://www.aquaremedy.com/images/glycemicindex.gif

I personally love biology and chemistry so I understand glycolysis and the Krebs Cycle so if you want to read about the science of getting ripped, check this out...

disclaimer: lots of scientific nerdy stuff...

http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/casi1.htm
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/casi2.htm

There are lots of weight training programs with picture and video guides at
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/bbinfo.php?page=WorkoutPrograms

For my body type I have chosen 3 days a week with the heaviest weights I can manage...

Wednesday

Bench press 3x12

Incline fly 3x12

Military press 3x12

Standing Dumbbell Triceps Extension 3x12

Friday

Squat 3x12

Lunges 3x12

Leg Curl 3x12

Pull down 3x12

Seated Row 3x12

Barbell Curl 3x12

Saturday

Squat 1x12, 10, 10

Lunges 3x12

Stiff-Legged Dead lift 3x12

Leg Curl 3x12

Calf-raise 5x12

Lastly I am using supplements for that lil' xtra advantage. The idea came to me during our Mountain Bike rides in Chagaramas in 2007.

We rode through the back trails, through the beautiful Bamboo Cathedral and then we faced the challenge of the hill to the Old Tracking Station.

In my normal bold and confident manner, I rushed into that climb; pitting raw brute strength against that oh so challenging hill.... and sad to say, I failed.
In Trini lingo -"I buss..." after maybe 30 feet up. I had very little experience riding uphill but I never let that stop me before...

In my ignorance, I started off in a high gear hoping to power my way up and gravity refused to give way... My momentum faded to zero and I reached a point where I could not push the pedal at all... and I had to give up because all my strength was quickly gone...

It did not help when a much older gentleman with his bike set in a suitably low gear calmly rode past me, with his pedals turning freely.

It got worse when a woman from the group also slowly rode passed me panting and gasping. I felt like my heart was about to burst through my chest. Although it was her first hill too, she made sure she had asked a lot of questions about gears and everything else... I thought that all those questions were wasting time... Suffice to say, they made it to the top while I turned around in defeat...

That experience made me think about the challenging hills in my life - exams, career and marriage and how unprepared I have been at times. I have rushed into so many hills without asking questions... without consulting people who have been there and done that... without listening to the wise old sages advising me to tread carefully.

Anyway, after my failed attempt at the Tracking Station hill, I humbly asked questions and I went on the all-knowing Internet and I read about gears and cadence and all the theory of climbing hills.

I also love challenges and I hate giving up...

Only those who dare to fail greatly, can ever achieve greatly.
Robert Kennedy

No one can defeat us unless we first defeat ourselves.
Dwight Eisenhower

On our next ride I did not have it exactly right but I adjusted and adjusted... and it was not smooth but I was determined not to give in to the hill. Going up, halfway to the old building at the top of the first climb, I still felt like I was gasping for oxygen... like a fish must feel after it is pulled out of the water and left flopping around in a boat.
I felt like stopping but I remembered some great advice... weave around from side to side to reduce the steepness of the climb. It helped and I could see that old delapidated building... not too far off... but my body was telling me to stop. I did not listen. I applied Bad Mind and I kept going slowly....slowly and eventually I was there and I threw the bike in the grass and laid down on the side of the road... bun... but I had made it to the old hut.
It doesn't matter that the rest of the group turned the bend and went on to the tracking tower without stopping. I did what I had set out to do and I was content... for now...Dark Kenthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14546693246302919365noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6057296972816896807.post-3057673102891159532007-05-02T02:53:00.000-07:002007-05-02T04:05:29.974-07:00Definition of "Bad Mind"I have not added to the blog for a while and I apologise to the two or three people who actually care to read my thoughts and ramblings.
Anyway, I wanted to write about something called Bad Mind which is what I use in spin class when I come to class tired from work or when my legs start to burn and I feel like I cannot continue to turn the pedal and I want to come off the bike.
According to the Trini Dictionary the term bad mind is "A person who holds grudges and repays them. Evil, cold personality spiteful" and at first I was thinking that is not exactly what I understand by bad mind but then again maybe it is.
The more I think about it... yes it does...
When I leave work tired with no energy after dragging through a tough day and I make the decision to pull up in front of Spinners World and sit on a bike for 45 minutes, I am riding out of spite or is it in spite of what my body is trying to say to me.
The battle is within me. I am holding a grudge...
My grudge is that I am in control of my body and my body is not in control of me and if I set the goal that I will achieve a six pack then I will and I refuse to let a silly thing like the need to sleep or physical exhaustion get in my way.
I dig deep and just as I feel that I cannot make it and I have to stop, I look in the mirror and push harder. Next time you see me in a spin class, just observe my bad mind in action.
Bad Mind is why I sing out loud in the middle of intervals or speed work of high tension. Basically I am saying to the muscles in my body that they need to stop the nonsense and get back to work.
Bad Mind is why I like to spin in the front row. For the most effective Bad Mind I need to look in the mirror... to look myself in the eyes and say "stop that mad talk about coming off the bike and going home".
Bad Mind drives me forward to push my body to its limits.
Bad Mind makes me add more tension and Bad Mind makes me refuse to rest between sets.
With Bad Mind, I am able to continue my weight loss diet. I can look at a huge bowl of lettuce for the third night in a row and dip that fork and stuff my mouth and just chew and chew. With bad mind I can look at that cheesecake (mmmm... cheesecake) and tell myself "no way, that is too many calories...". i can say no to that slice of Meat Lovers pizza (mmmm... Meat Lovers pizza with a stuffed crust). I can dig into that bowl of granola cereal morning after morning and crunch my way through to the end because without Bad Mind, granola is just so boring... And after a weekend of indulgence (like Tobago Jazz Festival), Bad Mind gets me to do two back to back classes.
Bad Mind helps me to take a handful of weight loss and energy supplements and swallow them with one gulp every single day. I have to use Bad Mind or I will throw up those capsules because swallowing a set of tablets is real pressure.
Try to use Bad Mind in your next workout... it continues to work for me.Dark Kenthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14546693246302919365noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6057296972816896807.post-8003323785397667792007-03-08T12:07:00.000-08:002007-03-08T12:19:03.881-08:00More Spinners World on YouTube... At one point I was riding seven classes a week and they were taking a beating.

I eventually decided I needed a new pair of shoes and first I bought a newer Nike Shox TL with the full shox (front and back). The old pair just had the shoks to the back and they did an excellent job or so I thought. Therefore in my nieve logic, I thought I would buy the more expensive full shox to get even more performance.

That was a huge mistake because the full shox are designed for running and they provide a soft, cushioned support for minimising the impact when your foot hits the road.
They are definitely NOT for cycling and I quickly realised that when my feet began to hurt during the spin class as the soles of the shoes bent and contorted as I was pedalling. The other thing that happened is that the sole quickly started coming apart.

I put them away after three classes and went back to old faithful.

After a few sessions at Spinners World where "everybody" is wearing cycling shoes, I finally gave in and went to Gene Samuel's place and bought a pair of Shimano SPD mountain bike shoes. Best decision I ever made.

There is no comparison to the ride from these shoes. From the very first class, I realised I was riding with a higher cadence with less effort. They allow me to concentrate on my pedalling action without worrying about straps coming loose or worst yet - bursting just as I am at 100% performance.

I should have read this guide a long time ago:

http://media.godashboard.com/spinning/Picking_a_cycling_shoe.pdf

When shopping for a good cycling shoe for your Spinning class, whether it’s a road or mountain shoe, you should always look for a stiff sole, good retaining system (how the shoes hold your foot in place) and stable, breathable, durable construction.
Stiff soles boost your leverage on the pedal and decrease foot fatigue.
Laces, Velcro straps or other retaining systems hold your feet securely in place, which aids the upward movement of your pedal stroke.
They also lend stability, reducing movement keeping your feet and body aligned correctly on the pedals.
Shoe breathability is also very important for all types of cycling, especially indoors. Riding indoors enerates considerable body heat and sweat, so make sure the shoe features mesh or another breathable fabric that circulates air to your feet.
Last, but certainly not least is safety. Gym flooring is often a hard surface and can become slippery from sweat after class. Most road cleat systems have large protruding cleats that can make walking difficult and even hazardous in a gym environment. Even the most experienced riders can experience loss of traction and balance.
For Spinning class, your best bet is a shoe with a recessed cleat or SPD® (Shimano Pedal Design) system and a rubberized sole for safety.Dark Kenthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14546693246302919365noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6057296972816896807.post-18827466576124341312007-03-06T05:58:00.000-08:002007-03-07T10:58:23.551-08:00Spinners World on YouTubePart 1 of Spinners World on the Brian Lara Promenade with Rachel Price for Trinidad Carnival 2007.

Part 2

Part 3
Dark Kenthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14546693246302919365noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6057296972816896807.post-25587953220808053602007-02-16T08:51:00.000-08:002007-02-16T11:00:02.955-08:00Trying to get a big belly... unbelievableIn my research into BDD, I found this amazing link to people who are trying hell hard to get a bigger belly

http://www.43things.com/things/entries/23102

Check these posts from wannabe fat belly people on that website:
Thefatbillywilly:
"I think that i don’t really know why I want to have a big belly: I think that I want this for having a very big and soft belly to touch and play and, I think, for having a sense of fullness and thoroughness"
GlitteryButterfly:
"I can’t wait until my little belly turns into a big belly! I especially have to admire Denise Belfon with her big saucy self just doing her thing on stage... bicycle wine, tricycle wine.... all kinda wine. Some like grape, some like cherry and some like lemonade. By that statement I am referring to the fact that some guys just love a "fat thing".
"Dem small girls too bony, nothing to hold on to..." For them there is nothing better than holding onto a big girl... more to love as they say. Sometimes it is funny to see a thin "magga" guy with an enormous woman and you could see the love in his eyes. There are several online websites that target those who love fat women and the forums discuss how much folds of hanging skin and dimples there are on their favorite model. Cellulite is a bonus.
Some women have also admitted to falling for a guy with a big "buddah" pot belly. I wonder if they like to rub it for good luck. And they find you fast and out of place to ask if they have to lift the belly to find "it".
Different strokes for different folks I suppose.Dark Kenthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14546693246302919365noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6057296972816896807.post-26444672199872053562007-02-16T07:54:00.000-08:002007-02-16T08:42:23.293-08:00Body Dysmorphic Disorder

I have diagnosed myself as having a condition called BDD - Body Dysmorphic Disorder. I have done spin classes all over South, Central, East and West Trinidad.
Check this list:
South -
Fitness Zone, Gulf City
Central -
Xtreme Fitness, Chaguanas
East Trinidad -
Milleneum Fitness Centre, Centre of Excellence, Tunapuna
Fitness Center, Arima
West Trinidad -
Fitness Center, Ellerslie Plaza, Maraval
Bio-Fitness Club, West Mall
Fitness Center, Starlite Plaza, Diego Martin
Long Circular Club, Long Circular Mall, St James
Spinners World, Woodbrook

I must however give a big up to Richard "Dickie" Hart at Spinners World for being the best Spin Ambassador I have met so far. Dickie, his wife Rachel and the rest of the staff at Spinners World have really been promoting spinning as one of the best forms of cardio exercise for all fitness levels. For those who do not know our local sporting heroes, Dickie was a former national cyclist with the likes of Gene Samuel, Ian Atherly and Robert Farrell.

Once you meet Dickie you can tell that this man loves cycling. Every conversation is about form and technique.

Before he opened Spinners World, he was an instructor at many of the gyms I attended. In fact many of the Spin instructors at the leading gyms have been trained by Dickie Hart.

I was therefore pleased to help Dickie promote spin classes on Carnival on d Promenade with Rachel Price on Friday morning. Gene Samuel also came out to give his support for the great things happening at Spinners World.

They have hosted spin burnouts every weekend for the past few weeks with prizes donated by great sponsors like Gatorade and Digicel. In fact I was happy to see someone win a Motorola Pebl on Saturday. You come to get a nice sweat and you go back home with a real nice cell phone... life nice. And after a Saturday spin we have a tradition of the best cowheel, oxtail or split peas soup courtesy my pardner Ainsley right outside Spinners World.

If you have time, check him on a Saturday at 2:00pm for a free spin class. He will be happy to get you started.Dark Kenthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14546693246302919365noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6057296972816896807.post-52460733821854901982007-01-31T05:06:00.000-08:002007-01-31T09:20:11.160-08:00Benefits of Spinning...why I just can't stopI usually consider myself lazy when it comes to physical work. I can spend hours on the internet or watching TV but even the thought of getting up to do something sweaty makes me feel tired.
I am not exactly sure when I became lazy because I was very active in sports when I was going to school. I remember playing small goal in the street for hours. We played half court basketball from morning until we couldn't see the ball in our hands. I even used to breakdance and every party was the opportunity to start a burnout. I used to sweat and enjoy it.
I can remember a sports day in secondary school when I took part in the 100, 200, 400 and 800 and I came home afterwards and catch cramp in my whole body. I couldn't stand up...I couldn't lie down... cramp in my legs, cramp in my belly, cramp in my arms... I had to drink a whole glass of salt water and wait for it to pass.
Fast forward some years later, I graduate from UWI, get married, have a child, building my career and suddenly I become a fat boy.
I even start to think a big belly good for my career. It make me look older and more like a manager because I in charge of people older than me and they resent the fact that a young boy in a more senior position. Working Point Lisas at the time didn't help because after 6 or 7 in the evening all it have is KFC and every day I working late and eating dinner special.
I realise I getting real bad and I need to exercise but is how to start. One day I say I going to treat myself and I buy a real nice mountain bike because as a youth, I used to ride all over the place and I used to enjoy it. Well boy I waste that money because after a short while, bike park up against the side of the house and even start to get rusty. Meanwhile belly getting bigger and my face getting more and more round. I eating late in the night cause my wife cooking big meals and I can't stand the thought of throwing away food... after all people starving in Africa and India. Every now and then I getting a reminder of how bad it getting.
I remember a company sports day where I line up with the other men. I remembering how I used to win race in school so I feeling hopeful that I will smoke them fellas even with a big belly. Well imagine my suprise and embarrasment to pull in dead last. Another clear sign of a spiralling situation was that I constantly had to buy bigger and bigger clothes. At my worst I was at a waist 46 pants with 48 right around the corner. The final straw was bending over to tie my shoelace and having to raise back up because I get out of breath and I was only 30 years old.
Nah boy, something had to be done but what to do...
Then one day my saviour say to me that he pay for a session for me in a spin class and I better don't make him waste his money. He start to talk about how nice this spinning thing is and how I will enjoy it. I reluctantly agree and I went to the gym in Gulf City not knowing what to expect. They show me how to set up the bike and I start. Well boy that first class was pressure and I feel to done after about 10 minutes. I riding out of time and I feeling like I cannot continue this thing. I want to come off the bike and walk out. The only reason I finish the class is male ego because it have a woman with gray hair and if she eh stopping, I eh stopping. The next few days my legs hurting like mad. Pressure to walk up stairs, pressure to walk down stairs.
Anyway, I decide to go back because, other than the pain, the class was nice. Besides, the pain pass after about 3 days so I sign up again for the next class. That went a little better and I decide I will go at least once a week. After the first month, I feeling more fit and being an ambitious guy, I say I going twice a week. One month later I was going three times a week and I was feeling really good about myself.
I start to weigh myself everyday and I was losing 2 to 3lbs every week. I make up a diet I call my cucumber diet. I started to eat cucumber instead of rice and I eating any amount of cucumber and lettuce and plenty meat. I was eating a half a chicken at times but I cut out the carbs. No more macaroni pie, no more huge butter bread sandwiches, no more pot spoons of rice ...even pelau cut out.
I began my research into supplements and I bought every weight loss supplement I saw on TV. I would go into the drugstore and ask them to show me each bottle so I could read about it. I went on the internet and read all the reviews. Eventually I was bringing in the supplements myself because the drugstores did not have what I wanted.
Between the spin classes, the diet and the supplements, I lost about 42 lbs and I am now at waist 34 pants and size smedium shirts. My endurance is amazing and my abdominals are somewher around a four pack and looking better every week.
My life has changed forever and I cannot and will not stop spinning.Dark Kenthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14546693246302919365noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6057296972816896807.post-28736534271381654612007-01-30T07:45:00.000-08:002007-01-31T07:03:02.934-08:00What is a SpinnJumbie?

Spinning or Indoor cycling is a form of high-intensity exercise that involves using a stationary exercise bicycle in a classroom setting. Some crazy fanatics have even been known to do back to back classes.
Dark Kenthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14546693246302919365noreply@blogger.com1
